6 Reasons You Need A Bernese Mountain Dog
So, you think you want to add a Berner bear to your family, huh? I mean, I can’t blame you. We are ADORABLE, especially as puppies!
I am the first Bernese Mountain Dog my family has owned. Now they can’t imagine life without me.
My pawrents often get asked, “What made you choose a Bernese Mountain Dog?”
The answer? There was a lot of time, research, and thought put into making the decision to bring me home.
My pawrents would frequently walk along 23rd in Portland, Oregon. It’s an area with fun shops and restaurants, many of them dog friendly. They would often see a Bernese Mountain Dog walking with its owner in that area and my mom would think in the back of her mind, “One-day I’m gonna have a best furiend like that.”
Fast forward about 5 years…
My human brother and sister were getting older and they didn’t need mom as much.

And like a lot of moms, she likes to be needed. So she started thinking about adding another family member, of the fur variety. She started researching my breed because she knew before she even met me it was important to learn the good (and not so good) things about bringing home and caring for a Berner. So she researched things like lifestyle, care, exercise and more. And this is what she discovered about having a Bernese Mountain Dog. Maybe it will help you decide if a Berner is right for your family too.
6 Reasons A Bernese Mountain Dog Is The Dog For You
We Are BEAUTIFUL
From our thick white chest and expressive rust-colored eyebrows to our giant size, we grab attention everywhere we go. Anyone who takes their Berner out in public knows to allow for extra time because undoubtedly people will approach to ask questions, get a head pat in, and even occasionally take a picture.
2. Bernese Mountain Dogs Have Unconditional Love
If you need a best friend, we are the dog for the job. We have so much love to give, not to mention that we are incredibly loyal and affectionate. We typically will pick one human to be our favorite (can you guess who mine is?) and will be bonded to that person for life. We love our family and are great with small children. Personally, I prefer little humans over big ones.

3. We Can Be Major Goofballs
Needing some comic relief? That’s where we come in! From our silly personality to that million-dollar smile, we are anything but a dull breed. We will act like a much smaller dog and try to sit in your lap. We may knock you over when we put our weight against you (lovingly called the Berner lean), or make you giggle with the strange way we sit (AKA the turkey leg). There’s one thing for sure, a Bernese is sure to turn that frown upside down.

4. Bernese Mountain Dogs Are Mellow
Okay, I searched the web on this one. Many say that we require a ton of exercise and are hard to train. Well, I for one like a couple walks a day, but for the most part I love to lay around.

5. Trainability Is A Plus
We can be a stubborn breed, but we also want to please. That means mom has found me very easy to train. I love to make my mom happy so I am eager to oblige. Give me some of my favorite treats (cheese) and I will try anything.

6. Great with Kids
I love my family. I am especially great with kids. I was a little nervous around my newborn nephew but I have warmed up to him and love to sniff and stay close to him…well, until he pulls my hair or boops my nose a bit too hard. Then I just walk away.
